Description The Bull Terrier is reliable with children. The Bull Terrier apparently can be traced back to the early 1800s in England with an original cross between the Bulldog and the Black-and-Tan Terrier, resulting in what became known as the Bull-and-Terrier. Unfortunately, this charming lash-up was not bred for its appearance, but for its fighting ability, where the breed showed both the stamina and strength of the Bulldog as well as the intelligence and agility of the Terrier. They were considered very ugly dogs, with badly marked coats, brutal features, and bow legs. In the 1850's, however, the Birmingham fighting dog breeder, James Hinks crossed the existing Bull-and-Terrier with the White English Terrier, which has since died out as a breed. After many years of careful experimentation, he managed to create a new white coated Bull-and-Terrier breed, which was smaller and more elegant, which he named the Bull Terrier. This new dog was tenacious, but had been bred never to turn on the master, no matter how injured. This makes the modern Bull Terrier unusually reliable with children, whose roughness might cause a lesser dog to snap! SIZE: 1.25"x1.25" |
