Description It does appear that the St. Bernard has been around as a St. Bernard, for quite a good while; like 300 years or so. These dogs were bred by monks as mountain rescue dogs at the Hospice of the Great St. Bernard Pass (between Italy and Switzerland), and are credited with saving over 2,500 human lives in that venue alone.
