Description Deoxyribonucleic Acid The code is arranged like a twisted ladder with millions of rungs. Called a double helix (key) it is twisted around the legs of chromosomes. The sides of the ladder are made of phosphate and deoxyribose sugar while the rungs are linked pairs of chemical compounds (nucleic acid bases). There are four such compounds Adenine, Thymine, Cytosine, and Guanine (Adenine links only with Thymine, and Cytosine with Guanine). Sections of the ladder are coded "messages" called genes.
