    The snail shaped structure in the inner ear which converts subtle vibrations into electrical signals.

The auditory portion of the inner ear, the Cochlea's name derives from the Latin for snail referring to the spiral shape. Filled with a watery liquid which moves in response to vibrations and causes 1000's of tiny hairs to move, creating electrical signals which eventually reach the brain. Loud noise can cause the hair cells to die, leading to loss of hearing.
