Microcars are due for a comeback!

(Last modified1 July 1998)

If you don't believe me, check out the Wall Street Journal on January 31, 1996 p B1: or Forbes (The return of the mini (sic) May6.1996) and Esquire (Swatch 'Em Go! March 1996)...all of which have big spreads depicting the microcars about to be hatched. The most well promoted so far is the Mercedes/Swatch "Smartcar" but most manufacturers seem to have one in the works. Moreover the Suzuki X-90 is sneaking towords microcardom already. Anyway, these are cars we're gonna' see, but when you boil it down they are a bore after the first rush of the size. The Fiat Toppolino was far cooler than any of these shoeboxes, although, like all new cars, they will run better. Or run at all.

The Swatch to be manufactured by Mercedes (1998?)

The Maxx is what GM is thinking about for Europe. The trouble with all of these is that they do not appear to be OPEN CARS!
An invatation to claustaphobia. Microcars must be open.

Here's a neat page of modern micro and cyclecars.
